History

Glaris blason

The only canton, whose emblem is showing a person: Saint Fridolin with his hiking stick and holding a bible. A legend says that this Irish missionary reformed the canton in the 16th century. 

He was offered the bigger part of the canton Glarus, which then became property of the monastery of Säckingen, before it was conquered by the Habsburger and finally became subordinated in 1415.

Glaris Landsgemeinde

The canton of Glarus is, except of Appenzell Innerhoden the only canton, which preserves the country community, which is a yearly meeting of all residents, where they agree upon laws proposed by the civil servants. In such a meeting the canton voted for the electoral law from the age of 16 on May 6, 2007.
